MANKATO, Minn. --- The second-rated Minnesota State baseball team swept the University of Mary on Saturday at the MSU Baseball Complex to improve to 13-1 on the year and 4-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play after defeating the Marauder's by scores of 3-6 and 10-7, respectively.
In game one, the Marauder's came out and pushed across one run in the bottom of the first. But the Maverick's took the lead back shortly after that in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore
Eric Peterson and senior
Kevin Kramer each singled to start off the inning. Senior
Max Waletich then came up and hit a bullet into the gap in right field that would have been a double but ended up just being a single as Waletich got hurt rounding first base.
In the bottom of the second MSU increased its lead to 3-1 after senior
Connor McCallum walked and stole second to get into scoring position. Later in the inning Peterson doubled to pick up an RBI.
MSU struck for three more in the fifth inning. A double by junior
Taylor Branstad and a single by redshirt freshman
Josh Crosby scored the first run of the inning. A triple by redshirt freshman
Dylan Dresel scored another run later in the inning.
Freshman
Dalton Roach pitched the final three innings and shut down U-Mary's offense to allow MSU to take game one by a final of 6-3. Roach pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit and one run to pick up his first career win. Sophomore
Mitchell Bauer started the game and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five in four innings.
Peterson led the offensive charge going 2-3 with one run and one run batted in. Waletich went 1-1 with two RBI. Senior Nolan Johnson saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end going 0-3.
In game number two, the score was 3-3 through the first three innings of play. MSU scored the game's next seven runs to take control, highlighted by Kramer's two-run home run in the sixth inning. The Marauder's made a run in the final inning but with runners at second and third sophomore
Tyler Frohwirth picked off the base runner at second to end the game with the scoreboard reading 10-7.
Freshman
Christian Howell picked up his fourth win of the season after allowing just two hits and zero runs over four innings. Senior
Nick Veale got the start and allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters.
Peterson, Kramer and Johnson each had two RBI while Crosby tallied three RBI.
Minnesota State will continue action this week when they travel to Kenosha, Wisc., to take on the University of Wisconsin, Parkside for a pair of games. Game one is slated for 2 p.m.
