Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team fell just short to Northern State on Monday afternoon, in a semifinal contest by the score of 58-52.
With the loss, the Mavericks overall record falls to 21-9.
In a back and forth first half where it saw five lead changes and three ties, the Mavericks were able to build a 18-11 lead over the Wolves with 10:03 left in the first. NSU would quickly react though, as the Wolves went on a 9-0 run themselves, to put them up 20-18 over MSU with 7:03 left in the first half.
However that didn't faze the Mavericks as they responded with a 11-2 run, to give MSU once again the lead over NSU, 29-22, with 5:01 left before halftime. The Mavericks would go into the break with the lead over the Wolves, 33-29.
The Mavericks shot 40% from the field in the first half and converted on five (5-13) three-pointers, led by sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto and senior guard
Aubrey Davis as they combined for all five. MSU was also able to assist on 11 of its 12 made baskets in the first half.
Delzotto led all scorers at halftime with 13 points, along with four assists and three rebounds, while Davis notched nine points, seven boards and four assists. Senior forward
Jamie Bresnahan was also able to collect six points and five boards in the first half.
To start the second half, the Mavericks would hold steady to their lead as they were able to extend it double-digits, 43-33, at the 12:48 mark of the half. After that point, momentum started to change hands as the Wolves would start to take control in the game.
For the next eight minutes of play, NSU would hold MSU without a field, which vaulted the Wolves to a 17-0 run to give them a 50-43 lead over the Mavericks with 5:57 left in the ball game. During the run, MSU shot 0-9 from the field and coughed the ball over four times to the Wolves.
The Mavericks would finally get their next points at the 5:04 mark in the half after a pair of made free-throws by senior guard
Ashley Olson, which sparked a little 5-0 run by MSU, to cut the Wolves lead to two, 50-48, with 3:23 left in the game.
Unfortunately that would be the closest the Mavericks would get to the lead for the rest of the game, as NSU would convert on 5-6 of its free-throws down the stretch, which led to a 58-52 win over MSU.
In the second half of play, the Mavericks were held to just 24% (7-29) from the field and were outrebounded by the Wolves, 29-19. Also MSU went 0-8 from three, while NSU shot an efficient 45% from the field in the second half.
For the game, the Mavericks were held well below their average season average in scoring offense, as MSU's averages 74 a clip this season. Also MSU shot just 24% (5-21) from three in the game, while on the season the Mavericks were shooting 36% from beyond the arc before coming into today's game.
Delzotto finished the game with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Davis was right behind with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Bresnahan finished just short of a double-double, as she ended the game with nine points and nine rebounds, while senior forward
Lexie Ulfers tallied seven points, five boards, two assists and two steals in the loss.
The Mavericks will soon learn their fate on Sunday, to find out if they make the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for 9 p.m. (cst) and can be streamed live on the main NCAA website.
