MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- The second-rated Minnesota Golden Gophers scored four goals in the first period and Minnesota State was unable to gain any momentum as they fell to the Gophers 10-0 in game one of the first round of the WCHA playoffs.
Minnesota's Hannah Brandt scored two goals in the first period, one at the 3:25 and the second coming at 5:23, to give the Gopher's a 2-0 lead. A few minutes later Maryanne Menefee scored and with 10 seconds left in the period Kate Schipper tallied another to give the Gopher's a 4-0 lead after one period of play.
In the second period Brandt scored to increase the lead to 5-0 at 16:42. The Gophers continued its strong play and added five more goals in the final period of play to take game one of a best-of-three series.
Senior
Erin Krichiver stopped 31 shots in the game while sophomore
Brianna Quade pushed aside 13 shots. Freshman
Nicole Schammel led the Mavericks with seven shots on goal while freshman
Elin Johansson had five.
The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 54-21 and went 1-4 on the power play while MSU did not have any power plays in the game.
Minnesota State (3-31-1) and Minnesota (30-2-4) will continue action in the first round of the WCHA playoffs tomorrow afternoon at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The opening face off is slated for 4:07 p.m.
