Mankato, Minn. – On "Senior Day, the Minnesota State women's basketball team beat Upper Iowa on Saturday evening, by the score of 82-48.
With the win, the Mavericks improve their record to 18-7 overall and 15-5 in NSIC play.
At the second media timeout of first half, Minnesota State already had built a 19-12 advantage over UIU, with 9:50 left before halftime. At that point, sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto already had posted 10 points and the Mavericks forced seven Peacock turnovers.
The next minute later, the Mavericks would gain their first double-digit lead of the game, at 22-12, thanks to a three-point basket from senior guard
Ashley Olson.
At the final media timeout of the first half, MSU would extend its lead to 14, 30-16, with 4:34 left remaining before halftime. To finish the half, the Mavericks would only extend their lead even more, as they went on a 11-0 run to go into the break. MSU went into the locker room leading, 41-16 over UIU.
The Mavericks forced 14 Peacock turnovers in the first half and MSU shot 47% from the field, while UIU shot just 22% from the field. The Purple and Gold were also able to hit five three-pointers in the half and outscored the Peacocks, 22-6, in the paint.
Delzotto led all scorers in the half with 12 points, along with four rebounds, while senior guard
Aubrey Davis recorded nine points, two rebounds and two assists. Olson finished the half with six points, three assists and two steals.
To begin the second half, the Mavericks started where they left off in the first half, as they quickly bursted out for 16-5 run, to push the score to 57-21 with 14:43 left in the game.
At one point, stemming from the first half, the Mavericks would not allow the Peacocks to record a field goal for about nine minutes of game action. UIU's last basket in the first half was at the 6:43 mark and the Peacocks would finally gets its next field goal at the 17:13 mark in the second half.
The Mavericks were able to push their biggest lead of the game to 40, 62-22, with 13:04 remaining in the game.
Throughout the rest of the game MSU would hold a comfortable lead over the Peacocks, which led to a final score of 82-48.
Overall, the Mavericks shot just shy of 50% from the field, at 49% for the game, while the Peacocks shot 27% for the game. MSU was able to outscore UIU in the paint, 42-14, and also in points of turnovers, 23-13.
The 48 points given up by the Mavericks is the least amount given up all season and the 32 point scoring margin marks the largest all season.
Delzotto ended the night with team-highs of 19 points and eight boards, while Olson finished with 15 points, three assists and three steals. Davis posted 12 points, three boards and three assists, as senior forward
Lexie Ulfers did a little bit of everything in the win, with six rebounds, five blocks and four points.
The Mavericks will return to action on Friday, as they will travel to Sioux Falls, for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
