Mavericks Drop Road Contest Against Wayne State

Wayne, Neb. --- On the Saturday afternoon the Minnesota State women's basketball team fell, 89-70, to Wayne State College on the road.

With the loss, MSU's overall record falls to 1-5 and 0-2 in NSIC play.

In the first quarter WSC held an 11-6 lead over MSU with 7:29 left to play. Throughout the rest of quarter the Wildcats controlled the pace as they outscored the Mavericks 21-8 to close out the first. After the first period WSC owned a 32-14 lead over MSU.

Halfway through the second quarter the Mavericks dwindled the Wildcats lead to eight, 36-28 with 5:09 left before halftime. However, WSC answered right back with a 16-6 run to finish out the second quarter. At the break the Wildcats led over the Mavericks, 52-34.

MSU shot 52% from the field, while WSC shot slightly better with a 53% field-goal percentage. The Mavericks shot 6-of-10 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats connected on 16-of-23 of its free-throw attempts. The Mavericks coughed the ball up 15 times, which converted into 21 points off turnovers for the Wildcats.

Junior Claire Ziegler [Mankato, Minn.] led MSU at the break with nine points and two steals, while senior McKenzie Hoelmenn [Lakeville, Minn.] added six points and three rebounds. Juniors Sammie Delzotto [Eagan, Minn.] and Karina Schroeder [Lake Crystal, Minn.] also tallied six points each in the half, while Schroeder grabbed four rebounds to her stat line as well.

In the second half it was more of the same as the closest the Mavericks got to the Wildcats lead was at the 2:52 mark in the third quarter. MSU was able to trim WSC lead down to 13, 61-48. WSC locked down on its lead throughout the rest of the game, as the Wildcats defeated the Mavericks 89-70.

MSU shot 45% from the field in the second half and connected on 4-of-9 of its three-point attempts, while WSC shot 44% from the field. The Mavericks committed 10 second half turnovers and the Wildcats took advantage of it again as they outscored MSU 10-1 in points off turnovers.

Ziegler finished the game with a team-high 14 points along with five boards, two blocks and two steals. Hoelmenn led MSU with seven rebounds and also ended with 12 points. Schroeder chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds, as junior Britney Scherber [Bloomington, Minn.] was the fourth Maverick in the game to finish in double figures with 12 points, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The Mavericks will return home next week as they will play host to Upper Iowa and #10 Winona State at Taylor Center. MSU will play UIU on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and WSU on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. as well.
