Mavericks Battle #14 Falcons to 2-2 Overtime Tie

Bowling Green, Ohio  ---   Minnesota State jumped out to two-goal first-period lead en route to a 2-2 overtime tie at #14 Bowling Green in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday.

With tonight's result, Minnesota State extends its unbeaten streak to six games.

A good forechecking play by senior Bryce Gervais led to the first goal of the game at 4:40 of the first period on sophomore forward Zeb Knutson's third tally of 2015-16.  The goal marked the sixth time this year Minnesota State has scored the first goal of the game.  It became a 2-0 lead at 14:42 after junior forward Michael Huntebrinker deflected defenseman Jon Jutzi's shot from the point past BGSU netminder Chris Nell with the Mavericks on the power play.  Huntebrinker entered the game riding a four-game point-scoring streak and the junior from Chesterfield, Mo., ranks second on the team in assists, but the goal is his first of the season.

Following a scoreless middle frame, Bowling Green worked its way back into the game beginning at 16:18 of the third when Brandon Hawkins solved Minnesota State freshman Jason Pawloski on a shot during a scramble from in front of the Maverick net that the rookie goaltender never saw. Then, with the Nell on the bench for an extra attacker, the Falcons forced overtime on a goal from Ben Murphy with less than seven seconds to go in regulation.  Neither team was able to score in the extra session.

Minnesota State freshman netminder Jason Pawloski, who started his sixth consecutive game, stopped 19 shots and now stands 5-0-3 on the season with the tie.

The Mavericks converted on one of six power play chances on the night, while the Falcons, who saw their record fall to 6-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 WCHA, were zero-for-four with the man advantage.

Minnesota State, which stands 8-6-3 overall and owns a 7-1-3 WCHA mark, closes out the two-game league series with BGSU Saturday.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
