No. 3 Mavericks Trump Golden Bears in Quarter Finals of NSIC Tournament

Minnesota State scored four goals in the second half of Wednesday’s 6-2 win over Concordia-St. Paul

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's soccer team dominated the second half of the first round in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in Mankato, Minn., as five different Mavericks contributed goals throughout the match.

After the win, the Mavericks improve their overall record to 17-1-1 on the 2015 season and senior Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) keeps pace and she increases her record to 17-1-1 on the year.

Minnesota State sophomore Lexi Pszanka (Rapid City, S.D.) drilled home the game's first two goals just  six and a half minutes apart from each other at 13:27 and at 19:56.  The first goal was set up  from a corner kick.  Freshman Abby Hausken (Oakdale, Minn.)  lined the ball up and put it in the box where there was a scramble, Pszanka got a hold of it and buried it for her second on the year.  Then, with another corner lined up by Hausken, Pszanka got a clean kick from it as she put the ball away, giving the Mavericks a two goal advantage. Concordia-St. Paul did not go down easy in the first half as they countered at the 42:33 mark of the half.  McKenzie Buck took a pass from Kelli Heytens for her fourth goal of the season, cutting MSU's lead to one goal to end the half.

The second half was all Minnesota State as they outscored the Golden Bears 4-1 in the second frame.  Senior Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill.) added on to the Maverick's lead just 10 minutes into the period. Junior Kiana Nickel (Wayzata, Minn.) fed a ball up to a streaking Kronforst who made a move to beat Golden Bear goalkeeper Emma Gartner, and shot at a wide open net at 55:02.  Freshman Maddy Burandt (Mankato, Minn.) tacked on another goal for MSU just over a minute later as she intercepted a CSP pass and fired it to the back of the Golden Bear net at 56:06.  Concordia-St. Paul answered eight minutes later as Jordan Rowan-Stafford fired in a shot from the top of the Maverick box to beat Hoeppner on the left, closing in on the score at 4-2.  Freshmen Julia Zach (Oconomowoc, Wis.)  and Morgan Cottew (Minneapolis, Minn.) closed out the game for MSU, with a goal a piece just one minute apart from each other.  Senior Emily Erickson (Woodbury, Minn.) assisted on Zach's goal while freshman Maddie Raley (Hudson, Wis.) supplied the helper on Cottew's.

By the end of it, Minnesota State held an advantage in shots (20-9), shots on goal (12-5) while Concordia-St. Paul found themselves leading the Mavericks in corner kicks by a clip of 7-2.  The Mavericks were penalized 14 times while the Golden Bears were called for six fouls on the day.

Hoeppner ended the game with three saves while CSP goalkeeper, Gartner, countered with six stops by the time the game ended.  The senior goalkeeper for the Mavericks has now allowed just 11 goals in 19 games played over the course of the 2015 regular season.

The regular-season NSIC Champion Mavericks will take on the winner of Winona State and St. Cloud State who play in Winona November 4th at 5:00 p.m. No. 3 Minnesota State will host the victor in Mankato, Minn., on Friday, November 6th at the Pitch, starting at 2:00 p.m.
