Bemidji, Minn. - The Minnesota State volleyball team fell (32-30, 25-17, 18-25, 14-25, 15-11) to Bemidji State in five sets on Saturday night after losing the first two sets of the match to the Beavers. The Mavericks rallied back in sets three and four before losing the fifth and final set to the Beavers.
With the loss, the Mavericks overall record falls to 15-9 overall and 9-7 in NSIC play.
The Beavers won an elongated first set over the Mavericks, 32-30. Early on in the set, MSU was leading 11-4 over BSU, before the Beavers fought back and were able to tie the set up at 17-17. From that point on the Mavericks and Beavers traded point for point as the set was still tied at 30-30. BSU prevailed and took the last two points in the set to take the win.
Junior
Sydney Geisness [St. Croix Falls, Wis.] led MSU with six kills in set one, while junior
Krista Hassing [Blue Earth, Minn.] tallied five kills and three total blocks of her own.
In set two BSU controlled the action from the start as it led throughout the whole set over MSU. The Beavers took set two comfortably, 25-17, over the Mavericks. MSU managed to post just a .028 attack percentage in the set, while BSU tallied a .207 attack percentage.
In set three, MSU gained momentum in the match after taking the third set, 25-18 over the Beavers. The Mavericks posted a .407 attack percentage and kept the Beavers to a .156 attack percentage. Junior
Courtney Anderson [Tripoli, Iowa] led MSU in the set with five kills and a sizzling .667 attack percentage, while junior
Lexi Platz [Lafayette, Minn.] and senior
Ellie Van De Steeg [Hutchinson, Minn.] each added three kills apiece in the set.
In set four MSU held on to its momentum and took the set comfortably over BSU, 25-14. MSU posted another outstanding attack percentage in the set with .486, compared to BSU's .161 attack percentage. Hassing dominated the set as she tallied 10 kills and a .769 attack percentage.
In the fifth and final set, the Beavers took control early as they were leading 7-1 over the Mavericks. The Beavers early run in the set proved to be the difference as BSU took the final set of the match, 15-11, over MSU.
Overall, MSU was able to out-hit BSU in the match, as the Mavericks collected a .259 attack percentage while the Beavers finished with a .191 attack percentage. However, MSU also added 23 attack errors and 13 service errors in the match.
Hassing finished the match with team-high's of 22 kills and four total blocks, along with a .378 attack percentage. Anderson finished second on the team with 12 kills and led the Mavericks with a .435 attack percentage.
Geisness ended the match with nine kills of her own, while Platz and sophomore
Vikolia Meade [Solon, Iowa] each posted seven kills of their own. Meade also added three total blocks to her stat line, while Van De Steeg tallied 34 assists, five kills and five digs.
Freshman
Autumn Risch [Howards Grove, Wis.] added 16 kills of her own, as junior
Haley Fogarty [Belle Plaine, Minn.] led MSU with 22 digs in the loss.
MSU will return to action on Friday as it will take on #20 Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
