Nickel Carries #6 Mavericks in 2-1 Victory Over Warriors

Kiana Nickel scored her 10th and 11th goals in Minnesota State’s NSIC-leading 13th win

WINONA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's soccer team rallied in the second half of Friday night's match to earn their sixth-consecutive win and increase their unbeaten streak to 13 games.

With the win, the Mavericks increase their record to 15-1-1 on the season and 13-0-1 in the Northern Sun. After the match, Winona State's record moves to 11-4-2- on the season and 8-4-2 against NSIC competition.

The entire first half of action saw a scoring drought by both the Mavericks and the Warriors as neither team was able to get a marker past their opposing goalkeeper. Though Winona State had an advantage in shots through the first frame, the shots that landed on net were found to be even at three a piece. Maverick goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) stopped all three shots she was faced with, while Warrior netminder Rachel Oleson challenged Hoeppner by recording three as well.

Frame two caught more action than the first as MSU was able to put away two goals while WSU scored just one. Just seven minutes and three seconds into the half, at the 52:03 mark, freshman Abby Hausken (Oakdale, Minn.) threw the ball into senior Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill.) who placed it in the box for junior Kiana Nickell (Wayzata, Minn.) to head in for her 10th goal of the season. Then, at 61:57, Nickel struck again as Kronforst dashed down the left side of the field and made a move, dishing the ball over to Nickel who booted it past a diving Oleson. Nickel's 11th goal of the year proved to be the game winner in the match. WSU cut the lead to one goal with two minutes and 32 seconds left, but that wasn't enough as Minnesota State held on for their 15 victory of the season.

At the end of the match, Minnesota State held an advantage in shots (21-20), shots on goal (8-7) and in cornerkicks (6-3). Hoeppner ended the game with six saves while Oleson kept pace with six as well.

Hoeppner recorded her 15th win on the year increasing her record to 15-1-1 in 2015. The senior goalkeeper has now allowed just nine goals in 17 games played with a conference leading .552 goals against average and .894 save percentage.

No. 6 Minnesota State will close out their regular season on Sunday as they host Upper Iowa in Mankato for Senior Day. First whistle is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
