MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team saw its eighth, Western Collegiate Hockey Conference loss of the 2015-16 season against the heavily-favored Wisconsin.
The Mavericks found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after the first frame of the game. At 9:32 of the first period, Wisconsin's Baylee Wellhausen completed a play the was set up by Jenny Ryan who passed the puck to Mellis Channell. Nearly six minutes later, junior defenseman
Sara Bustad (Stillwater, Minn.) was called for a hooking infraction at the 16:07 mark. The Badgers' Sam Cogan eventually capitalized on the man advantage when she slid a puck through the legs of a screened Minnesota State goaltender, junior
Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.).
The second stanza played to the same tune that of the first period. UW came away with two more netters while the Mavericks were unable to get any of their 10 shots on goal past Badger goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens. Wisconsin's first goal of the period came early in the frame at the 2:32 mark. Mikaela Gardner passed the puck across the point to her D-partner Maddie Rolfes who snapped a shot on net. Forward Kim Drake picked up the rebound and put it by a sliding Quade. The Badgers next tally came from the point when Rachel Jones ripped a shot though the bodies of both team past Quade for her fourth goal of the season.
The final period followed suit as UW outscored MSU 2-0. At the 8:52 and 14:09 marks, Courtney Burke scored the Badgers second power-play goal of the afternoon, while Ericka Sowchuk notched the final goal of the game.
By the time the final whistle blew, Minnesota State had put 16 shots on net while the Badgers totaled 46. The Badgers also found an advantage on the power-play as they went 2-4 and the Mavericks were 0-2 on the afternoon. Quade tallied 40 saves in the game, adding on to her season total and NCAA-leading 339 stops (.914sv%).
Minnesota State (2-8-1, 0-8-0 WCHA) will close out their series with Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon at Verizon Wireless Center. Game time is scheduled for 2:07 p.m.
