No. 12 Mavericks Take Lead in NSIC Standings After 2-1 Win Over #25 Augustana

Freshman Morgan Cottew netted her sixth goal of the season with six and a half minutes left, to carry the Mavericks over the Vikings

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State soccer team won their 12th game of the 2015 season at Augustana University Sunday Afternoon by a score of 2-1.

With the win, Minnesota State increases its record to 12-1-1 on the season and 10-0-1 in the Northern Sun. After the match, Augustana's record moves to 11-2-1 on the season and 9-1-1 against NSIC competition.

#12 Minnesota State found a test in the first half of action vs. Augustana University Sunday afternoon. Though neither team was able to find the back of the net, there were opportunities to be had with the Mavericks generating two shots on goal in six shot attempts while the Vikings produced three on goal in seven shot attempts. Augustana did collect an advantage in corner kick chances as well, while both teams were called for an evenly-matched five infractions in the first 45 minutes of play.

Mavericks senior goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) was just challenged with three Vikings shots making all three saves while Vikings goalkeeper Taylor Machacek recorded two stops.

Augustana took advantage in the second half when Samantha, Tymkowicz laid up a pass to Stephanie Stevens who was able to take a shot from inside the box to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Minnesota State countered just under 14 minutes later as senior Korey Kronforst, (Cary Ill.) blasted one past Machacek after sophomore Jenny Hoerter (Stevens Point, Wis.) passed over the ball inside the Viking box. Then, with just six and a half minutes remaining, freshman Morgan Cottew (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished off her sixth goal of the season, taking the lead for MSU and cementing the win at 2-1.

At the end of the 90-minute match, both teams had accumulated five shots on net with the Mavericks recording 12 attempts compared to the Vikings' 13. MSU was ousted in corner kick opportunities by a mark of 3-2 and tallied up 11 fouls on the afternoon.

Hoeppner increased her record to 12-1-1 on the season after the victory, making four saves on the day. MSU has now allowed just six goals on the year and have outscored their opponents by a 50-6 margin in 2015.

MSU's returns home to Mankato next weekend as they take on Minnesota Duluth on October 23rd and St. Cloud State October 25th at The Pitch., Both games are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
