Mavericks upset #2 Golden Bears

Box Score Mankato, Minn. –  The Minnesota State volleyball team upset the #2 Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears with a 3-1 victory Tuesday evening in Taylor Center by the scores of 23-25, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-15

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC. It's MSU's fourth  all-time win over CU.

In set one, the Mavericks were able to build an early lead over the Golden Bears, 10-7, before CU came storming back to make it 10-10. Throughout the rest of the set it was a back and forth, point after point, with the Golden Bears coming through with the 25-23 win. Senior Chandra Honebrink led the Mavericks with eight kills, as sophomore middle blocker Krista Hassing added six kills of her own. Freshman Sydney Powell posted four kills with a .667 attack percentage, as senior Haley Doran added three service aces.

In the second set, Minnesota State took control early as it built a 17-9 advantage at one point, as the Mavericks never looked back, en route to a 25-19 win. Again it was Honebrink and Hassing leading the charge with six and five kills, respectively, with junior Ellie Van De Steeg adding 13 helpers.

The Mavericks in set three were battling point for with the Golden Bears all the way to 11-11 before MSU went on a 10-5 run to make the score 21-16. The Purple and Gold prevailed in the end with the 25-18 set victory. Honebrink posted five kills, with Doran adding two more service aces and Van De Steeg adding 13 more assists.

In the fourth and final set, the Mavericks once again were able to gain a big lead in the set with 19-11 advantage. MSU sustained its lead throughout the remainder of the set as it won the match with a 25-15 fourth set win. Hassing continued her dominance with eight kills and a .600 attack percentage as Honebrink wasn't far behind with five kills and an impressive .833 attack percentage.

Pacing the Maverick offense was Honebrink and Hassing with 20 and 18 kills, respectively. Van De Steeg led the Mavericks in assists with 53, as Powell contributed 14 kills to her stat sheet. Doran finished with a match-high five service aces as well.

The Mavericks will return to the court Friday at Taylor Center against the MSU Moorhead Dragons. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
