Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D. --- The Minnesota State softball team pushed its winning-streak to 16 games as it downed Northern State by scores of 4-0 and 11-1 in a double-header conference tilt on Sunday.
With the wins, MSU improves to 26-6 overall and 10-0 in NSIC action, while the Wolves fall to 8-18 overall and 1-9 on the circuit. Head coach
Lori Meyer now sits seven wins away from surpassing the 1,000 career wins mark.
MSU started the day with a 4-0 victory over Northern State, the Mavericks 11th shutout of the 2014 campaign.
The Mavericks got things going in the top of the third inning in the first contest as freshman
Tatum Klein recorded the game's first hit before stealing second, eventually crossing the dish to give MSU a 1-0 lead after the top half of the third inning.
MSU was able to start a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore
Karli DesLauries got things started with a single, stole second, then was driven in by an RBI single from Klein. Senior
Samantha Holien advanced Klein with a base hit before senior
Lindsay Erickson recorded her 271st career hit, moving her into sole possession of the MSU career record for hits, scoring Klein and giving the Mavericks a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Mavericks offensive production carried over to the sixth inning as senior
Anna Cole posted a leadoff single before sophomore
Emily Bransky subbed in to pinch run. Bransky then stole second and third base before being batted in by sophomore
Laura Milligan, scoring the game's final run and pushing the MSU lead to 4-0.
Freshman pitcher
Coley Ries improved to 12-2 over the season and posted her seventh complete game and fourth shutout of the season. The Eagle Lake, Minn., product only allowed one hit in seven innings of work while walking one and recording 11 strikeouts.
Klein paced the Maverick offensive attack in the first game of the day, scoring two runs on two hits with an RBI in three at bats.
In game two of the double-header, MSU scored the first run of the game as sophomore
Abby Whritenour singled to left field, advance to second on the throw and was batted in by freshman
Ashley Thell, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead after the top of the second inning.
MSU exploded for four runs in the top of the third inning as Erickson recorded her ninth home run of season. The Mavericks scored four runs on four hits with one Wolves' error in the side. Erickson, senior
Kelly Wood, Milligan and Thell all posted runs in the inning.
The Wolves responded with their first hit and run of the game in the bottom of the third inning before MSU posted an additional run in the top of the fourth as Holien crossed the dish as an unearned run bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of the Mavericks after four complete innings.
Junior
Chelsea Riordan started the sixth inning with an RBI single before Cole blasted her fourth home run of the season pushing the Mavericks lead to 8-1. MSU posted two runs on three hits and left one runner stranded in the top half of the sixth.
MSU added an addition three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as it posted three runs on four hits. DesLauries, Klein and Riordan all scored runs in the final inning, earning MSU its 26th win of the season with an 11-1 victory over Northern State.
Junior pitcher
Brittany Lauterbach went all seven innings and improved to 12-4 overall. Lauterbach allowed one run on two hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts in her ninth complete game of the season.
Thell led the Maverick offensive attack with two runs on two hits in three at bats. Riordan and Whritenour each posted two RBI in the contest.
The Mavericks return to action Monday as they square off against MSU Moorhead in Aberdeen, S.D. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
