#20 Minnesota State Finishes Regular Season on 10-Game Winning Streak

Box Score MARSHALL, Minn. --- #20 Minnesota State used an early 20-0 run to end the regular season on a 10-game winning streak as it downed Southwest Minnesota State 89-58.

With the win, the Mavericks improved to 21-5 overall and 18-4 on the circuit. The Mustangs fell to 4-22 overall and 2-20 in NSIC action.

The Mustangs raced out to an early 9-5 lead on senior night before the Mavericks ignited, going on a 20-0 run opening up a 25-9 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening stanza. MSU forced 18 first half turnovers, recording 10 steals and scoring 18 points off of the SMSU miscues, as it took a 47-23 lead into halftime.

MSU connected on 47% (16-34) of its shots from the field, 47% (8-17) from behind the arc and 88% (7-8) from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes of the contest. SMSU connected on 47% (9-19) of its shots from the field, 40% (2-5) from behind the arc and 60% (3-5) from the stripe.

Junior Jamie Bresnahan paced the Mavericks in the first half, netting 10 points and was one of three Mavericks to haul in two rebounds in the first half. Junior Lexie Ulfers had sticky fingers in the opening frame, recording three steals. All 11 Mavericks that saw the floor in the first half, made their way into the scoring column.

The Mustangs were able to keep up with the Mavericks through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but MSU still outscored SMSU 19-17, opening up a 66-40 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the game. MSU's defense prevented SMSU to cut the lead to anything less than 20, as the Mavericks finished the regular season on a 10-game win streak with an 89-58 win.

MSU was led by senior Ali Wilkinson who netted 14 points. Bresnahan finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while freshman Tyra Johnson rounded out the top scorers netting 10 points off the bench.

The Mavericks connected on 49% (27-55) if its shots from the field, 41% (9-22) from deep and 87% (26-30) of their shots from the free throw line. The Mustangs shot 43% (20-47) from the field, 42% (5-12) from deep and 81% (13-16) from the stripe. SMSU committed 24 turnovers allowing 28 Maverick points from the errors.

MSU will host Minnesota Crookston in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament on Wednesday. The opening tip is slated for 6 p.m., at Taylor Center.
