ST. PAUL, Minn. --- The tenth-rated Minnesota State men's basketball team saw its winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as it fell to Concordia-St. Paul 75-73.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 9-2 on the season, including a 4-1 NSIC record. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 6-5, including a 2-3 conference record.
The first half saw a total of six lead changes through the first 12 minutes of the game. With 8:16 left in the first half, the Golden Bears took the lead at 21-19, before finishing the first half on 23-13 run to take a 44-32 lead into the locker room.
Senior
Connor Miller paced the Maverick offense in the first half with 14 points, while the Mavericks connected on 11-of-31 (.355) shots from the field.
Terez VanPelt led the Golden Bears with 10 points in the first half. As a team, CU shot 75% (18-of-24) from the field.
Concordia-St. Paul managed to increase its lead to 17 at 60-43 with 13:54 left in the contest, but the Mavericks would go on a 27-9 run through the next 10 minutes to take the lead at 70-69 with 2:55 left in the game. Despite the comeback, the Golden Bears were able to rally in the final three minutes as they dropped in six more points, while allowing just three to claim the 75-73 win.
Senior
Assem Marei led the Mavericks with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Miller finished his day with 16 points. Senior
Zach Monaghan notched his 11th career double-double with 13 points and 12 assists, while freshman
TJ Lake tallied 12 points.
As a team, MSU shot 43.1% from the field, including a 13-of-31 (.419) showing from behind the arc. The Mavericks also passed out 19 assists and forced 17 turnovers.
Nuni Omot led the Golden Bears with 19 points, while VanPelt finished with 16 points.
The Mavericks continue their season on Friday, Jan. 2, as they host the St. Cloud State Huskies. The opening tip is set for 8 p.m.
