MANKATO, Minn. --- Sophomore
Sidni Trotter chose a good time to score her first career goal for #1 Minnesota State, helping the Mavericks take down Winona State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/US Bank Tournament.
Minnesota State has now won back-to-back tournament championships and three of the past four titles.
With the win Minnesota State stays undefeated and improves to 21-0-0 overall while the Warriors record falls to 15-5-1.
The Mavericks controlled the pace of play in the first half and limited the Warriors to just five shots. MSU had a few scoring chances early on but were unable to get any clean shots on net. It wasn't until the 23rd minute when senior
Emily Moris was awarded a corner kick that the Mavericks would strike. Moris kicked a high arching ball and Trotter outjumped everyone to head one past WSU goalkeeper Rachel Oleson to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Mavericks kept up the pressure and did not allow the Warriors any good scoring chances. Defensively the Mavericks had a solid effort allowing just two shots on goal and eight total shots in the game as Trotter's goal was enough to push MSU past WSU 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly McGough made two saves on the afternoon and produced her 12th shutout of the season. She now owns a record of 19-0-0 in 2014.
Trotter was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while Moris, McGough and senior
Breanna Steele were named part of the All-Tournament team.
Minnesota State will now wait and see when and where they will be playing in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The selection show is scheduled to air tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
