Tyler Henderson gave Minnesota State the 24-21 win against Pittsburg State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, MSU improves to 12-0 on the season, while PSU finishes its season 11-2.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard on their first possession of the game as sophomore
Ricky Lloyd threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to senior Austin Rieder to give the Mavericks an early 7-0 lead.
Pittsburg State got its first points of the game with 2:58 left in the first quarter as Connor Frazell booted a 27-yard field goal to pull within four of MSU at 7-3. The Gorillas took the lead later in the second quarter as Anthony Abenoja connected with Gavin Lutman on a 27-yard touchdown pass to give Pittsburg State a 10-7 lead heading into halftime.
MSU retook the lead on its first drive of the third quarter as Lloyd threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior
Dorian Buford to put MSU up 14-10. Buford has now tied Josh Nelsen's single-season record of 14 touchdown catches at MSU.
Pittsburg State closed within one point at 14-13 after a 25-yard field goal from Frazell, but the Mavericks increased their lead to eight as Lloyd ran in MSU's third touchdown of the game from two yards out to put the Mavericks up 21-13 with 13:04 to go in the game.
The Gorillas answered right back on their next drive as Lutman caught his second touchdown pass of the season, this time a 59-yard catch, to make the score 21-19. Abenoja connected with Robert McField in the end zone for the two point conversion to knot up the score at 21.
After both teams missed a field goal, the game went into overtime, marking the first time MSU has gone into overtime since its 38-35 overtime victory against Northwest Missouri State in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
The Mavericks got the ball to start the overtime period. MSU managed to rush ahead to the PSU 12, before Haffar booted a 29-yard field goal to put the Mavericks up 24-21.
On Pittsburg State's first play in the overtime session, Abenoja's pass was intercepted by Henderson in the end zone to give the Mavericks the 24-21 win.
Lloyd led the Maverick rushing attack with 91 rushing yards and a touchdown, while junior
Connor Thomas posted 71 rushing yards. Lloyd also connected on 13-of-25 passes for 214 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Rieder notched 94 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Buford tallied 91 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Henderson led the Maverick defense with 13 tackles, including three for a loss, to go along with an interception. Senior
Nathan Hancock added six tackles and one interception as well. Junior
Rumeal Harris also posted an interception.
MSU returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, as it hosts the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at Blakeslee Stadium. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
