Mavericks Battle #2 Golden Gophers in Home-and-Home Series

What's On Tap: After battling with the No. 3 ranked team in Wisconsin last weekend, the schedule doesn't get any easier as the Mavericks host No. 2 Minnesota on Friday night in Mankato before skating against the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (0-11-1) and Golden Gophers (9-1-2) will play at 7:07 p.m. at All Seasons Arena on Friday and 4:07 p.m. on Saturday at Ridder Arena.

Looking Back at Last Week: Minnesota State played Thursday and Friday in Madison last week against the University of Wisconsin. MSU dropped the first game by a score of 8-2 and were shutout by the Badgers 8-0 in the second contest.

Wisconsin took a 3-0 lead early in the first period on Thursday night, but the Mavericks answered back with a goal of their own at 14:14. Sophomore Savannah Quandt tallied her second goal of the year to bring the score to 3-1 after one period of play. Freshman Nicole Schammel scored her fourth goal of the year during the second period but the Badger's offense was too potent adding five more goals in the final two periods. Junior Erin Krichiver tied her career high in saves stopping 59 shots.

On Friday Wisconsin's offense came out with the same fire they had on Thursday as they score another eight goals with six of those eight coming in the middle period. The badgers totaled 44 shots against sophomore netminder Brianna Quade who tallied 36 saves.

Looking at the Golden Gophers: Minnesota owns an overall record of 9-1-2 and are 7-1-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action. The Golden Gophers are coming off a weekend in which they swept Ohio State by scores of 4-2 and 5-3, respectively.

The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Brad Frost who is in his eighth year at the helm of the program. Frost has compiled a record of 233-39-19 in his career at Minnesota. Junior Hannah Brandt (F, 5-6, Vadnais Heights, Minn.) leads the team in scoring totaling 19 points off of nine goals and 10 assists. Sophomore Dani Cameranesi (F, 5-5, Plymouth Minn.) also has nine goals and has seven assists for 16 points. Junior Amanda Leveille (G, 5-7, Kingston, Ont.) owns an 8-1-1 record and  ranks second in the WCHA in goals against average (1.48) and third in save percentage (.938).

As a team the Golden Gophers are averaging 3.83 goals per game while allowing just 1.42. They have killed of 87.2 percent of their penalties and are 17 of 49 on the power-play.

Last Time Around: The Mavericks and Golden Gophers faced off against each other four time during the 2013-14 with Minnesota sweeping the season series. The U of M leads the all-time series between the two team with a record of 3-65-3.

Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women's hockey program - started in 1998-99 - is currently in its 17th season of competition and has compiled a 158-360-48 (.322) record in 566 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 16th year as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and boast an 89-283-40 (.266) mark in 410 league contests.
