Mavericks Upended by Golden Eagles

Box Score Mankato, Minn. –  The Minnesota State volleyball team fell in four sets on Fridaty night to Minnesota Crookston, 3-1, by the scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22.

With the loss, the Mavericks record falls to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference. 

In set one, the Mavericks and Golden Eagles were all tied at 11-11 before MSU went on a 10-4 run to make the score 21-15. The Mavericks ended up taking the set 25-18. Sophomore middle blockers, Courtney Anderson and Krista Hassing led the way as they each had six and five kills, respectively. Junior setter Ellie Van De Steeg added 15 assists to her stat sheet.

In set two it was another close set before the Mavericks took a 10-7 lead over the Golden Eagles. However, UMC fought back in the set and ended winning the set 25-20. Once again it was Hassing leading the charge for the Mavericks as the sophomore finished with another five kills.

The Mavericks in set three were able to build an early 7-3 advantage before the Golden Eagles came back to tie the set up at 10-10. The rest of the set went back and forth with each team having two point leads before UMC took control late and came out victorious in set three. Senior outside hitter Chandra Honebrink accumulated four kills while Anderson and Hassing each posted three kills. 

In the fourth and final set, it was the Golden Eagles building a 13-9 advantage before the Mavericks rallied back to make it all square at 13-13. The match was still tied at 17-17 before the Golden Eagles went on a 8-5 run to the finish the set and match at 25-22. Hassing added another five kills on the night with Honebrink chipping in another three kills.

Overall, Hassing led the Mavericks offensively with 18 kills while Anderson and Honebrink each posted 11 kills. Junior outside Rachel Ott tallied six kills as Van De Steeg added 43 helpers, five kills and 12 digs. For her career, Van De Steeg is now only 20 assists away from recording her 3,000 assist as a Maverick. In doing so she would become the sixth Maverick in school history to join the MSU 3,000 assist club. 

Defensively, MSU was led by sophomore libero Haley Fogarty as she posted a match-high with 25 digs while senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Braun recorded 16 digs of her own.

The Mavericks will return to the court on Saturday, at Taylor Center, as they will play host to Bemidji State. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
