Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team gave up three goals in the first period and could not recover losing to St. Cloud State 5-1 Friday night at All Seasons Arena.
The Mavericks fall to 0-3-0 on the season and 0-3-0 in the WCHA while the Huskies improve to 2-3-1 and 1-0-0 in league play.
The Huskies were able to score seven minutes into the game as Amanda Arbogast was able to slide one past sophomore goaltender
Brianna Quade. SCSU would strike again at 17:45 as Audrey Hanmer scored her first goal of the season to put the Huskies up 2-0. The Mavericks would commit two penalties within thirty seconds of each other to give SCSU a five-on-three opportunity and the Huskies took advantage as Lauren Hespenheide tallied her first goal of the season.
The Mavericks would chip away at the lead in the second period. Sophomore
Savannah Quandt netted her first goal of the year with freshman
Lindsey Coleman and junior
Katie Johnson assisting on the play but that would be all the scoring in the middle frame with MSU trailing 3-1.
SCSU added two more goals in the final period to win the first game of a home-and-home series by a final score of 5-1.
Quade was tested often in the game making 49 saves on the evening and falls to 0-2-0 on the season.
The Mavericks were outshot 54-22 and were 0-1 on power-play opportunities compared to the Huskies who went 1-6 with the extra skater.
The Mavericks will continue action tomorrow night as they travel up to St. Cloud to battle the Huskies on their home ice. The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m.
