#12 Mavericks Fall to Sharpshooting Dragons

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn.. --- The 12th-rated Minnesota State men's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday evening as it fell to the MSU Moorhead Dragons 99-85.

With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 14-3, with an 8-2 record in NSIC play. With the win, the Dragons improve to 11-3, with a 7-3 mark in conference play.

The first half featured five lead changes as neither team led by more than seven points throughout. With 10:07 left in the first, the Mavericks led 23-19, only to see the Dragons finish the half on a 29-18 run to take a 48-41 lead into the locker room.

As a team, the Mavericks connected on 17-of-37 (.459) shots from the field, while passing out seven assists. Junior Zach Monaghan paced the Maverick offense with 18 points and five assists.

The Dragons hit on 18-of-31 (.581) shots from the field, including a 6-of-11 (.545) showing from behind the arc. Isaac Sevlie led the Dragons in the first half with nine points.

With 12:23 remaining in the second half, the Mavericks found themselves trailing by eight at 68-60. The Dragons would then finish the second half outscoring the Mavericks 31-25 as the Mavericks fell 99-85.

Monaghan finished the game with 18 points and 11 assists for his second double-double in the last two games. Junior Assem Marei led all scorers with 23 points, while senior Gage Wooten recorded his second career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Mike Busack dropped in 10 points as well.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 45.3% (34-of-75) from the field, brought down 34 rebounds and passed out 15 assists.

A total of eight Dragons scored at least 10 points, including Urbane Bingham, who led the Dragons with 17 points. Jordan Riewer added 15 points and six assists as well.

As a team, the Dragons shot 58.1 (36-of-62) from the field, including  an 11-of-23 (.478) showing from behind the arc.  

The Mavericks return home Friday as they host the Augustana Vikings. The opening tip is set for 8 p.m.
