Mavericks Begin League Play Against Winona State

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University volleyball team hosted the Maverick Invitational where it posted a 1-2 record, moving to 4-3 on the season as the Mavericks downed the University of Illinois Springfield, 3-1 before falling to Black Hills State, 3-2, in Friday's nightcap and dropping to conference-foe Northern State, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks were led by sophomore Chandra Honebrink (Waconia, Minn.) and junior Jenna McNallan (Andover, Minn.), who each posted 37 kills in the three MSU matches. McNallan posted a team-high .303 hitting percentage, while collectively, the Mavericks hit .217 in the tournament. Sophomore setter Ellie Van De Steeg (Hutchinson, Minn.) added 132 assists and 19 digs in the three-match span.
Defensively, it was freshman libero Haley Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) leading the way with 52 digs.
Scouting the Opponent: MSU will host Winona State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Taylor Center to open the circuit, before taking to the road to do battle with Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa, on Saturday with first serve slated for 4 p.m.
The Mavericks currently hold a 45-13 all-time advantage over the Warriors, who enter the contest with a 3-6 overall record. Dave Simon is in his fifth season at the helm of the Winona State volleyball program and last season helped the Warriors to a 20 win season, the seventh 20+ win season in program history.
Winona State is led by senior Bekah Saugen, who has posted 110 kills (3.06 per set), defensively the Warriors have had three athletes post triple-digit digs so far this season, led by senior Katie Froehle, who has amassed 128.
The Peacocks have yet to defeat the Mavericks on the volleyball court, with MSU holding a 12-0 all-time advantage. Aaron Nelson is in his second full season at the helm of the Peacock volleyball program, a season ago his team posted a 16-13 record.
The Peacocks are led by sophomore Jennifer Mundt, who has tallied 110 kills (3.55 per set), but only has a .157 hitting percentage, but has also recorded 107 digs. Defensively, it is freshman Chelsea Berry leading the charge with 165 digs.
It's All In the Family: Freshman libero Haley Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) picked up right where her sister Chelsea Fogarty left off in rewriting the Minnesota State volleyball record book. Chelsea, who holds the school record for most kills (1,559) in a career saw her younger sister Haley break the single-match dig record in her first collegiate tournament, recording 43 digs against Western Oregon, passing Kris Wolle, who recorded 40 digs in a match during the 1998 season, prior to the start of rally scoring.
