Mavericks Fall to Wolves in Four Sets

Box Score Mankato, Minn.--- The Minnesota State volleyball team would take the first set of the match but would lose the final three sets as it fell to Northern State 3-1 in the final match of the Maverick Invitational. With the loss the Mavericks fall to 4-3 on the young season.

In the first set the Mavericks fell behind early trailing 14-10 but would not be denied as they won the first set 25-22. Senior Briel Hendricksen tallied six digs for the Mavericks. Sophomore Chandra Honebrink led MSU with five kills while junior Tiana Runck added four in the set. As a team MSU posted a hitting percentage of .214.

Northern State came out firing in the second set and at one point scored eight points in a row as they took the set 25-15. Runck added another four kills while Honebrink added three bringing their match totals to eight for the Mavericks. NSU had the advantage in hitting percentage as they hit .478 while MSU hit just .071.

MSU would improve its hitting percentage to .237 in third set but NSU would eventually claim the set 25-20. Freshman Haley Fogarty had five digs while sophomore Ellie Van De Steeg compiled 11 assists. Junior Jenna McNallan paced the Mavericks with five kills in the set.

The wolves would take the fourth and final set with a score of 25-11. Collectively the Mavericks hit .149 in the match compared to the Wolves who hit .361. MSU was led offensively by Honebrink who had a total of 12 kills on the day. Van de Steeg paced  MSU with 36 assists while Hendricksen led the team with 12 digs.

The Mavericks will return to action on Thursday as they host the Warriors of Winona State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
