Box Score Orlando, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team kept its groove going into the third day of the Rebel Spring Games as it defeated both LIU Post (6-2) and Northwood (8-0, six-innings) to improve to 12-4 on the season, as it extended its winning streak to 11 games.
MSU began the day with a 6-2 win over the LIU Post Pioneers. The Mavericks struck first as they tallied two runs in the top of the first off a two-run shot by junior
Lindsay Erickson. MSU added three more runs in the top of the third off a two-run single from senior
Abby Sonner and an RBI-double from junior
Samantha Holien to go up 5-0.
The Pioneers managed to get two runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the Mavericks lead at 5-2. MSU would answer back with an RBI-single in the seventh off the bat of Sonner to give the Mavericks a 6-2 lead. MSU would shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Senior
Courtney McKelvogue earned the win as she threw five innings, while giving up just two runs, one earned. Sophomore
Brittany Lauterbach came on in relief and allowed just one hit in the final two innings. Liz Weber (2-1) took the loss for the Pioneers as she gave up six runs, five earned, in six innings of work.
MSU finished the day with an 8-0 win over the Northwood Timberwolves.
McKelvogue (6-3) earned her sixth win of the season as she threw four innings, while giving up just twi hits and a walk. Lauterbach came on in relief for the final two innings and gave up just one hit. Casey Brown (2-2) took the loss as she gave up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits.
Sonner got the scoring going for the Mavericks in the first inning as she tallied a two-run double to give MSU a 2-0 lead. MSU added three more runs in the third to go up 5-0, before the Mavericks closed out the game with a three-run sixth inning to claim the 8-0 win. Freshman
Emily Bransky got the scoring going in the sixth with an RBI-single, before freshman
Mandi Mauch closed out the game with a two-run single.
The Mavericks continue play in the Rebel Spring Games Wednesday as they take on Lees-McRae at 2 p.m., and Ashland at 4 p.m.
