Box Score 2 Orlando, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team kept things rolling Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games as the Mavericks defeated both Tiffin (5-1) and Adelphi (11-0).
With the wins, MSU improves to 10-4 on the season as it extends its winning streak to nine games.
The Mavericks began the day with a 5-1 win over the Tiffin Dragons. Freshman
Coley Ries (5-1) earned the win as she gave up one run in five innings of work, while striking out six batters. Sophomore
Brittany Lauterbach came on in relief of Ries in the sixth and set down all six batters she faced to lock down the win for the Mavericks.
Amber Young (0-1) took the loss as she gave up five runs, on seven hits, in 1.2 innings pitched. Kelsey Yaratch came on in relief of Young and threw the final 4.1 innings for the Dragons as gave up just one hit and a walk.
The Mavericks got the scoring going early as they tallied three runs on three hits in the opening inning. Senior
Abby Sonner got the scoring going with a two-run double, with junior
Kelly Wood singling in an additional run to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
MSU scored two more runs in the second as senior
Jenna Peterson stole home and junior
Lindsay Erickson posted an RBI-single.
The Dragons managed to get one run in the fifth inning and had the bases loaded with nobody out, but a strikeout and a double play got the Mavericks out of the inning with the minimal damage as they led 5-1. Lauterbach would come on in relief and set the Dragons down in order through the final two innings to secure the win.
Minnesota State finished the day with a five-inning, 11-0 victory over the Adelphi Panthers.
MSU opened the game with a three run first inning, which included a two-run double from Wood. MSU then added six runs in the top of the second, all of which came off a pair of three-run shots from Erickson and Wood. The Mavericks added two more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 11-0.
Senior
Courtney McKelvogue (4-3) earned the win as she kept the Panther offense in check all game long as she gave up just four hits, while striking out three, to complete the five inning shutout. Laurin Watts (3-2) was saddled with the loss as she gave up nine runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
MSU continues play in the Rebel Spring Games Monday as it takes on a pair of opponents including LIU Post at 8 a.m., and Northwood at 10 a.m.
