Minnesota State Holds Off Golden Eagles

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s basketball team returned to the hardwood for the second game of a two-game home-stand in hopes of extending its win-streak to seven. The Mavericks did just that, as they earned the 83-76 victory.

The Mavericks set the tone of the game early as they jumped out to an early 13-5 lead with 13:22 to play in the opening frame.  The Golden Eagles would cut the Maverick lead to two, 22-20 with 6:10 remaining in the half, but MSU was able to take a 42-35 lead into intermission.

Junior forward Steffaney Thomas continued her career-weekend, netting 10 points in the first half. The Mavericks connected on 16-of-35 (46%) of their shots from the floor, 2-of-14 from downtown, but a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.

The Mavericks started the second half on a 19-3 run, taking a 61-38 lead with 12:40 remaining in the contest. The Eagles would battle back within six points, cutting the MSU lead to 69-63 with 5:23 remaining in regulation. The Mavericks would hold off the Golden Eagle earning the 85-78 win.

Minnesota State connected on 45% (29-64) of its shots from the floor, 22% (6-27) from behind the arc and 88% (21-24) from the charity stripe. The Mavericks forced the Golden Eagles to commit 19 turnovers while MSU recorded 11 steals.

Wilkinson lead all-scorers with 25 points, she was one of four Mavericks to reach double-digit points, she was joined by Thomas who improved her career-high in single game points to 15, sophomore Aubrey Davis added 13 points and junior Karlee Gengenbacher netted 11 points.

Minnesota State will take to the road for its final conference road games of the season next weekend as it travels to Fayette, Iowa to do battle with the Peacocks of Upper Iowa, tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
