Strong Second Half Sends #12 Mavericks Past Dakota State

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The 12th-rated Minnesota State men's basketball team wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a 95-71 win over Dakota State Monday evening in Taylor Center.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Trojans stayed steady at 4-3.

A total of four Mavericks reached double-figure in scoring with junior Zach Romashko leading the way with a career-high 26 points, to go along with nine rebounds. Junior Zach Monaghan notched his first career double double with 14 points and 10 assists, while senior Gage Wooten brought down a career-high 14 rebounds. Senior Connor O'Brien dropped in 17 points, while senior Tanner Adler posted 16 points.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 47.3% from the field and 86.7% from the line. MSU also brought down 44 rebounds and committed just four turnovers on the night, while passing out 22 helpers.

The first half saw some close back and forth action as the Mavericks took a 37-35 lead into the locker room. MSU led by as many as 11 in the first half, but DSU managed to keep things close as they managed to tie up the score on two occasions.

MSU shot just 33.3% from the field, while Dakota State shot 44.1% from the field, including an 11-of-22 showing from behind the arc.

Minnesota State asserted itself quickly in the second half as it jumped out in front by 12 at 53-41 with 15:43 left in the game. MSU continued it pile it on in the second half as it shot 58.5% from the field, en route to securing the 95-71 win.

Dylan Hale led the Trojans with 15 points, while Yusuf Vinson notched 14 points and five rebounds.

The Mavericks begin their NSIC schedule on the road Saturday as they take on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. The opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
