#5 Mavericks Top Waldorf in Home Opener

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- A strong second-half performance from the fifth-rated Minnesota State men's basketball team proved too much for Waldorf Saturday evening at Taylor Center as the Mavericks rolled to a 94-50 victory.

With the win the Mavericks improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 3-3 on the season.

A total of five Mavericks tallied at least 11 points in MSU's victory including junior Zach Monaghan, who posted a game-high 22 points, while shooting 7-of-14 from the field. Senior Tanner Adler made his presence felt on offense as well as he dropped in 21 points, including a 5-of-11 showing from beyond the arc.

Senior Gage Wooten finished just one rebound shy of a double double as he notched 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Alex Hanks and junior Zach Romashko each tallied 11 points as well.

The first half saw some close back and forth action as neither team led by more than 10 points throughout the opening frame. MSU started the game on a 7-0 run, but Waldorf responded with a 14-0 run to go up 14-7 with 14 minutes left in the half. The Mavericks would slowly chip away at the Warriors lead and would eventually reclaim the lead at 26-24 with just over six minutes left in the first half. The Mavericks would eventually take a 34-26 lead into halftime.

The second half saw the Mavericks dominate as they dropped in a total of 60 points, while shooting 21-of-31 (.667) from the field, to secure the 94-50 win. MSU also shot 9-of-13 (.692) from behind the three point line and also finished the second half with a perfect 9-of-9 showing from the line.

As a team, MSU connected on 33-of-62 (.532) shots from the field and 17-of-19 (.895) shots from the charity stripe. MSU also brought down 38 rebounds, passed out 22 assists and forced 19 Waldorf turnovers.

The Warriors were led Jordan Nelson and Gunsby DeJohnett who each posted 13 points.

The Mavericks continue their homestand Sunday as they host the Jamestown Jimmies. The opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
