#1 MSU Wraps Up Regular Season with Noon Game at Upper Iowa

Foreshadowing: After posting a 52-17 victory over Sioux Falls this past weekend, the #1 Minnesota State football team will wrap up its regular season schedule on the road Saturday as it takes on the Upper Iowa Peacocks. The opening kickoff is set for 12 p.m.

Our History: The 2013 season marks the school's 87th season playing football. The Mavericks are 405-376-28 (.517) in 809 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922.  Minnesota State is in its sixth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 52-9 (.850) record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 18 conference championships, including 16 NIC titles. Last season, the Mavericks advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Top of the Heap: MSU currently sits atop the NSIC standings with a perfect 10-0 record. Should MSU defeat Upper Iowa Saturday, it would claim its second straight outright NSIC Championship. The Mavericks have already clinched their fifth NSIC South Division Championship.

Grabbing the Reigns: The 2013 season marks the second season with interim Head Football Coach Aaron Keen patrolling the sidelines for Minnesota State. Last season, Keen guided the Mavericks to a 13-1 record, en route to an appearance in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Keen currently boasts a head coaching record of 46-28, including an unblemished mark of 21-0 in NSIC play. He owns a 23-1 record at Minnesota State.

Mutual History: Saturday's meeting between the Mavericks and the Peacocks will mark the eighth time they have faced each other dating back to the 2004 season. MSU owns a 7-0 record against UIU, including a 3-0 record in Fayette.

Concerning the Mavericks: The Minnesota State Mavericks improved to 10-0 this past weekend as they defeated Sioux Falls 52-17 at Bob Young Field. MSU mustered 563 yards of total offense in its recent victory, while limiting the USF offense to 346 total yards.

The Maverick defense currently ranks third in the nation in rushing defense (70.8 ypg) and third in interceptions (21). Sophomore Tyler Henderson lead the Mavericks with 59 tackles, while senior Chris Schaudt leads the team with 8.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Patrick Schmidt leads MSU with five interceptions on the season, while sophomore Josh Gordon leads the Mavericks with 6.5 sacks.

The Maverick rushing attack currently ranks 10th in the nation, with an average of 276.4 yards per game. MSU also ranks 19th in the nation in scoring with an average of 40.5 points per game.

Senior Jon Wolf leads the Maverick rushing attack with 846 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while sophomore Connor Thomas ranks second on the team with 833 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Wolf has thrown for 1,642 yards and 15 touchdowns through 10 games this season. Senior Dennis Carter leads MSU with 771 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches. Junior Austin Rieder has 383 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the season as well.

Concerning the Peacocks: The Upper Iowa Peacocks own a 6-4 record on the season and have won their last two games against Sioux Falls (30-28) and Wayne State (24-21).

Chris Smith leads the UIU rushing attack with 1,672 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Cole Jaeschke has thrown 2,787 passing yards and 22 touchdowns on the season. Lucas Hefty has posted 801 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, while Keaton Hosch has tallied 635 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Ethan Douglas leads the Upper Iowa defense with 97 tackles, including a team-high 12.5 for a loss. Alex Wahl leads the Peacocks with five sacks, while Chayz Holt leads UIU with three interceptions.
