Mavericks Down Beavers in Five Set-Thriller

Box Score Bemidji, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University volleyball team improved to 8-5 overall with a mark of 4-2 in league action, as it downed Bemidji State 3-2.

"I don't know how we did it. Bemidji State beat us on the stat sheet but our kids fought hard and never quit," said head coach Dennis Amundson. We had to play a lot of players and they all tok turns contirbuting. It was good to see us compete like that on the road."

The Mavericks dropped the first set of the evening by a score of 25-18 to the Beavers, who posted a .311 attack percentage. MSU was led by sophomore Chandra Honebrink (Waconia, Minn.) who paced the Maverick offense with four kills in the set, while posting a .311 hitting percentage.

MSU found itself trailing for much of the third set, trailing 18-17 freshman Haley Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) stepped to the service line and rattled off two-straight service aces giving the Mavericks a 19-18 lead. MSU would never lose that lead, taking the second set 25-22, bringing the match to a 1-1 draw heading into intermission.

The Mavericks found themselves in a 10-5 hole early in the third set, but were able to outscore the Beavers 20-12 down the stretch, led by junior Jenna McNallan (Andover, Minn.) who posted seven kills in the set.

MSU dropped the fourth set by a score of 25-19, bringing the match to a 2-2 tie. McNallan tallied four kills in the set, and hit .378 through the first four sets.

The Mavericks found themselves down 7-4 in the fifth set, before they rallied outscoring the Beavers 11-5 to take the fifth set 15-12, winning the match 3-2.

MSU has three student-athletes record double-digit kills, led by McNallan who finished the match with 19. Sophomore Rachel Ott (Stoughton, Wis.) and junior Tiana Runck (Springfield, Minn.) added 15 and 12 kills respectively. Collectively the Mavericks posted a .159 hitting percentage.

The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow as they do battle with Minnesota, Crookston, first serve is slated for 4 p.m. in Crookston.
