Mavericks Fall to No. 6 Wisconsin in WCHA Opener

Box Score Madison, Wis. --- The Minnesota State University women's hockey team fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in WCHA action as it fell to No. 6 Wisconsin, 3-0 Friday evening.

After the opening period neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game sat at a 0-0 tie, the Badgers recorded nine shots in the opening stanza to the Mavericks eight. Senior goalie Danielle Butters (London, Ontario) recorded nine saves in the period.

Wisconsin was able to score its first goal of the season 6:30 into the second period as redshirt junior Brittany Ammerman scored her first goal of the 2013-14 campaign, opening up a 1-0 Badger lead.

Despite outshooting the Badgers 19-18 through the first two frames, the Mavericks found themselves in a 1-0 hole, heading into the third period. Senior netminder Alex Rigsby registered 19 saves in the first 40 minutes of action.

The Badgers would add an addition goal with 7:03 remaining in the third period, scored by junior Karley Sylvester, opening up a 2-0 lead in favor of Wisconsin.

With an empty net the Badgers would add a third goal with 42 seconds remaining in the contest taking a 3-0 lead.

Senior forward Kelsie Scott (Souris, Man.) recorded a team-high five shots on goal as the Mavericks were outshot 28-25, Butters finished the game with 25 saves.

The Mavericks will play return to the ice tomorrow as they finish the series against the Badgers, start-time is scheduled for 3:07 p.m.
