Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team defeated Upper Iowa, 3-1 in a non-conference affair, on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Taylor Center to improve to 10-12 overall.
The Mavericks started strong, leading throughout the first set earning the 25-17 win. Sophomore
Chandra Honebrink (Waconia, Minn.) tallied seven kills for the Mavericks and recorded a .545 hitting percentage in the match's opening set.
The Peacocks answered taking set two, 25-19. Honebrink led the Mavericks once again with six kills on eight attempts. Junior
Tiana Runck (Springfield, Minn.) tallied three kills and posted a .500 attacking percentage in the set.
MSU jumped out early in the third with a seven point run opening up a 12-4 lead and held on to win 25-13. Runck posted four kills on eight attempts in the frame, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.
The Mavericks saw the fourth set tied at 20-20 before ending the set on a 5-1 run; taking the set 25-21 and earning the 3-1 win in the match. Freshman
Lexi Platz (Lafayette, Minn.) and Runck each tallied five kills.
Honebrink finished the match with a career-high 19 kills, Runck tallied 16 kills and Platz posted 11 kills for the Mavericks. Sophomore
Ellie Van De Steeg (Hutchinson, Minn.) tallied 52 assists while Freshman
Haley Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) led the defensive charge with 13 digs.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday against No. 23 Northern State at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Taylor Center.
