Box Score Bismarck, N.D. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over the University of Mary to snap a six-match skid, taking the first two sets by scores of 29-27 and 25-14 before falling in the third set 25-20, but was able to capture the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
With the win the Mavericks improve to 9-11 overall with a mark of 5-8 on the circuit.
The Mavericks were able to capture the first set, in an extended set, 29-27 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. MSU found itself trailing early in the set, before battling to a 23-23 draw, and were able to outscore the Marauders 6-4 to open up a 1-0 lead in the match.
MSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Mavericks earned a 25-14 win extending their lead to 2-0 going into intermission behind a .333 attacking percentage. Freshman
Lexi Platz (Lafayette, Minn.) tallied 11 kills through the first two frames.
The Marauders would come out firing in the third set, claiming a 25-20 win, bringing the match to 2-1 in favor of the Mavericks. MSU was led in the set by freshman
Sydney Geisness (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) who recorded four kills on five attempts.
MSU would open an 11-6 lead early in the fourth set, before U-Mary would battle back to an 18-14 set in favor of the Mavericks. MSU would go on the take the match 3-1 with a 25-19 win, led by junior
Tiana Runck (Springfield, Minn.) who posted five kills in six attempts in the deciding set.
Platz led the Mavericks with a career-high 15 kills, while hitting .414 and was one of four Mavericks to tally double-digit kills, joined by Geisness with 15, and Runck and sophomore
Chandra Honebrink (Waconia, Minn.), who each finished the match with 10 kills.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as they travel to Minot, N.D. to do battle with the Minot State Beavers.
