#2 Minnesota State Heads to Concordia-St. Paul Saturday

Foreshadowing: On the heels of its 42-14 homecoming victory over Northern State last week, the second-rated Minnesota State football team will look to keep things rolling Saturday afternoon as it travels to Concordia-St. Paul. The opening kickoff is set for 12 p.m.

Our History: The 2013 season marks the school's 87th season playing football. The Mavericks are 399-376-28 (.514) in 803 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922.  Minnesota State is in its sixth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 46-9 (.836) record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 18 conference championships, including 16 NIC titles. Last season, the Mavericks advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Grabbing the Reigns: The 2013 season marks the second season with interim Head Football Coach Aaron Keen patrolling the sidelines for Minnesota State. Last season, Keen guided the Mavericks to a 13-1 record, en route to an appearance in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Keen currently boasts a head coaching record of 40-28, including an unblemished mark of 15-0 in NSIC play. He owns a 17-1 record at Minnesota State.

Mutual History: Saturday's encounter between Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul will mark the eighth time the Mavericks and the Golden Bears have crossed paths. MSU currently leads the all-time series with a 5-2 record. The Mavericks have won the last two encounters, including a 30-10 victory last season at Blakeslee Stadium.

Concerning the Mavericks: The Minnesota State Mavericks imrpoved to 4-0 this past weekend as they defeated Northern State 42-14 in front of more than 5,000 fans in Blakeslee Stadium. MSU mustered 607 yards of total offense in their recent victory, including 447 yards on the ground.

Sophomore Connor Thomas currently leads the Maverick rushing attack with 267 yards, to go along with four touchdowns. Senior Jon Wolf ranks second on the team with 260 rushing yards and four touchdowns as well.

Wolf has thrown for 664 yards and six touchdowns through four games this season. Senior Dennis Carter leads MSU with 263 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. Junior Austin Rieder has 160 receiving yards and one touchdown on the season as well.

Junior Kris Fleigle leads the Maverick defense with 28 tackles. Sophomore Josh Gordon has posted 21 tackles, including a team-high four tackles for a loss. Gordon also leads the Mavericks in sacks with 2.5. Junior Nathan Hancock leads the team with two interceptions, while freshman Colt Nero leads the defense with two fumble recoveries.

Concerning the Golden Bears: The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears improved to 3-1 last weekend as they defeated MSU Moorhead 36-34.

Tre Spears leads the Golden Bear rushing attack with 490 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Ronald Zollicoffer has posted 194 rushing yards on the season and one touchdown.

Jared Russo has completed 47-of-80 passes on the season for 622 yards and six touchdowns, compared to four interceptions. Cordell Smith leads the team with 141 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Gabe Boyce has tallied 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns as well.

On defense, Josh Trifunov leads the Golden Bears with 35 tackles. Chris Krakau leads CSP with two fumble recoveries, to go along with two sacks.
