10/11/2013 8:35:00 PM

Box Score Providence, R.I. --- #11 Minnesota State opened the scoring, but could not hold the lead, eventually falling to 14th-rated Providence in season-opening action in Providence, R.I., Friday night.

The Mavericks led after the first period of play on a goal from sophomore forward Bryce Gervais, whose wrist shot from the left side beat Friar netminder Jon Gillies on the far post at 4:41.

Providence, which not unlike the visiting Mavericks, was experiencing its first game of the 2013-14 season, scored twice in the second frame and did not look back. Forward Ross Mauermann beat Maverick sophomore Stephon Williams with a backhanded chance for a shorthanded goal at 4:01 to tie the game. Then, at 12:05, defenseman John Gilmour snapped a wrister high on the glove side to give the Friars the lead.

Sophomore forward Mark Jankowski's backhander past Williams at 2:46 of the third made it 3-1, then at 3:30, Gilmour got his second on the night in making it 4-1. Jankowski's shot off a rebound into the net closed out the scoring.

Providence, which was one-for-nine in power play chances in the win, outshot the Mavericks by a 37-26 margin in the game. Following PC's fifth goal, Williams, who finished with 22 saves, was replaced by freshman Cole Huggins, who was credited with ten saves on ten shots.

The game was played in front of 2,771 fans at PC's Schneider Arena.

The Mavericks and the Friars close out the two-game nonconference series Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. face-off slated.

Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
