#7 MSU Keeps Rolling, Downs Wayne State

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Friday evening’s contest at Taylor Center featured a rematch between #7 Minnesota State and Wayne State, but the outcome remained the same as the Mavericks lengthened their winning streak to 10 games with a 73-59 win.

With the win, MSU improves to 16-1 on the season, including a 12-1 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. WSC took the loss and fell to 12-7 and 6-7 in league play.

The Mavericks took a 33-16 lead into the second half and didn’t miss a step as they pulled ahead by 25 at 43-18. MSU would not let the Wildcats get any closer than 13 points as they locked down their 10th straight victory.

Senior Jarvis Williams led all scorers with 23 points, while sophomores Zach Monaghan and Assem Marei added 14 points and 12 points, respectively.

As a team, the Mavericks connected on 24-of-58 (41.4%) of their shots from the field and hit on 8-of-19 (42.1%) attempts from behind the three point line. MSU tallied 16 second chance points and 18 points off turnovers.

Derrell Williams led the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points. He was followed by Jordan Holdsworth who posted 15 points.
The score remained close near the halfway point of the first half as the Mavericks led 15-11 with 11:20 left in the half. MSU would then close out the first half on an 18-5 run to take a 33-16 lead into the half.

In the first half, Monaghan led all scorers with 14 points, while junior Gage Wooten added seven. As a team, the Mavericks hit on 6-of-11 (54.5%) shots from beyond the arc. MSU also posted nine points off of nine WSC turnovers while adding nine second chance points.

Williams and Holdsworth led the Wildcats in the first half with six points each, with Williams also leading the team in rebounds with six.

Minnesota State wraps up its home stand Saturday as it hosts Augustana. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
