#13 Mavericks Look to Continue Winning Ways in Nebraska

MSU (4-0) will look to compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Fall Classic this weekend. The Mavericks first match of the tournament will be against Northern State.

Starting Strong: The Minnesota State volleyball team opened its season with four straight wins marking the third straight year the Mavericks have started at least 4-0. Minnesota State started its season by defeating Alaska Anchorage 3-1, CSU Monterey Bay 3-1, Academy of Art 3-1 and closed the Otter Classic against Dominican (NY) 3-0.

Moving Up: The Mavericks began the 2012 campaign ranked No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association, after a 4-0 start at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Classic the Mavericks jumped 10 spots to No. 13 in the Week 1 AVCA Coaches Top 25.

Senior Leadership: Minnesota State rosters five seniors on the 2012 volleyball team. The seniors led the way in the first weekend of the 2012 season. Outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty led the offensive charge for the Mavericks, she recorded 59 kills through the first four matches. Middle blockers Courteney Steinhauser and Jill Storlie each contributed 44 kills while helping Minnesota State to its 4-0 start.

Kill Queen?: Outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) recorded 59 kills in the first four matches of the year and has 1,206 career kills (seventh most in school history), she needs 349 more to become the school’s all-time kill leader. Jen Jacobs (1999-2002) currently owns the all-time kill record with 1,555. Fogarty has averaged over 382 kills per season throughout her first three years.

She’s a Freshman: Ellie Van De Steeg (Hutchinson, Minn.) began her career as a Maverick at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Classic this past weekend where she started all four matches and was able to record 147 assists, 22 digs and 10 blocks.

On the Attack: The Mavericks have recorded 212 kills through the first four games of the 2012 season compared to 149 by their opponents. Minnesota State currently boasts a .234 hitting percentage while holding its opponents to .115.

Can You Dig It?: Minnesota State currently averages 14.5 digs per set compared to 13.7 by their opponents. Junior Kelli Elhardt leads the Mavericks in digs with 54 (3.60 per set).

Block Party: The Mavericks have recorded 39 total blocks this season compared to 24 by their opponents. Senior Jill Storlie leads the way for Minnesota state with 22 total blocks (1.47 per set).
