Mavericks Comeback Bid Falls Short Against #2 Badgers

Box Score Mankato, Minn. ---  Minnesota State was unable to dig itself out of a 2-0 after the first period and was defeated by Wisconsin 3-2 Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena.

Wisconsin opened up the scoring in the first period when Brianna Decker scored her first and second goals of the season at the 9:33 and 19:00 mark respectively.

Junior goaltender Danielle Butters helped MSU regain the momentum making several saves to kill a five minute power play in the second period as two potenital goal were reversed upon review. Junior forward Tracy McCann netted her first goal of the season when she tucked a wrister under the blocker of goaltender Alex Rigsby bringing the Mavericks within a goal.

The Badgers made it 3-1 at 5:25 in the third period when Kim Drake slapped a rebound past Butters.  However, Minnesota State would respond at 14:31 when senior defense Emilia Andersson blasted a slap shot from the point into the net giving MSU it’s first power play goal of the year

Wisconsin held off a furious Maverick rally for the rest off the third period as it outshot MSU 39-18 in the game.

Both McCann and Andersson tallied a two-point game and Butters made 36 saves bringing her weekend total to 77.

Minnesota State (0-1-1, 0-1-1 WCHA) hits the road next weekend as it travels to Ralph Engelstad Arena to take on the University of North Dakota with the drop of the puck set for 7:07 p.m. on Oct. 5th.
