9/21/2012 9:41:00 PM

Box Score Mankato, Minn. – No. 12 Minnesota State University endured yet another five set match as the Mavericks defeated Northern State 3-2 in Taylor Center Friday night in an NSIC match-up.

MSU looked to gain revenge from losing earlier in the season to Northern 1-3 in the New Victorian Inn and Suites/Runza Fall Classic. The Mavericks continued their dominance in 5 set matches improving to a 3-0 record on the year.

In the first set Minnesota State University was led by senior #Kayla Berning# and sophomore #Courteney Steinhauser# who recorded 5 kills each for the Mavericks. In a closely contested contest in which there were 12 tie scores the Mavericks battled to a 20-18 lead when Northern State took its first time out as Minnesota State never looked back defeating the Wolves 25-23 despite a similar showing from the Wolves freshman Kelsey Chambers who of which also had a 5 kill performance.

Northern State responded in the second set as the Wolves topped the Mavericks 25-19. MSU had nearly triple the amount of errors in the second set compiling 11 errors compared to just 4 in their first set of the night.

That trend would continue on into the third set as the Mavericks were defeated 20-25. MSU did have a game high 18 kills in the set but unfortunately the Mavericks also committed nine errors. The Mavericks tied the set at 19-19 but the Wolves responded with a 5 point run to take the set.

Looking to even the score MSU played to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth set and the Mavericks never looked back as they cruised to a 25-17 win. Northern recorded 9 team errors, their highest amount in a set for the evening.

Heading into the fifth set the Mavericks looked to continue their winning ways adding to the 2-0 record for the season.  Down 2-5 early in the set, the Mavericks crawled back to even the score 6-6. Steinhauser rallied the Mavericks ahead with a 3 consecutive kills to take a 10-9 lead. The Mavericks looked to build on the momentum as they rallied from behind to defeat the Wolves 15-11 and take the match 3-2.

Senior Outside Hitter #Chelsea Fogarty# led the Mavericks with 18 kills and 40 total attempts. Fogarty also tied for second on the team with 12 digs.

The Mavericks (9-3, 3-1 NSIC) now look to take on No. 19 Minnesota State University-Moorhead in a matinée match-up tomorrow afternoon at 4pm in Taylor Center.
