No. 23 Mavericks 2-0 After First Day of Otter Classic

Monterey Bay, Calif. –No. 23 Minnesota State volleyball team kicked off their 2012 campaign with a 3-1 win over Alaska-Anchorage in the first game of the Otter Volleyball Classic and defeated host Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
The Mavericks took the first set of the season by a score of 25-20 after jumping out to an early 3-0 lead and finished the set with 10 kills, five errors and hit .185.
 
In the second set of the match the Mavericks trailed 21-18 down the final stretch before they were able to battle back to 23-21 and earn the 27-25 win to go up 2-0. The Mavericks finished the set with 16 kills, seven errors and hit .214.
 
The Seawolves would not go away quietly however as they rallied in the third set coming away with the 25-21 win to bring the match to 2-1. Minnesota State was still able to record more kills in the third set than Alaska-Anchorage but committed one more error.
 
The fourth and final set saw the Mavericks down 14-10 before freshman Ellie Van De Steeg took over at the service line leading a six point charge for Minnesota State which included two service aces. The Mavericks came away with the three point victory, defeating the Seawolves 25-22 to come away with the 3-1 win and improved to 1-0 on the season.
 
The Mavericks had three players record double digit kills led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty who finished with 15 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two assists. Fellow seniors Kayla Berning and Jill Storlie were able to add 11 kills and 10 kills respectively.

No. 23 Minnesota State volleyball team returned to the hardwood for their second match of the day against host Cal State Monterey Bay, the Mavericks defeated the Seawolves 3-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
Minnesota State fell to Cal State Monterey Bay in the first set of the match by a score of 17-25. The set was tied at 14-14 before the Seawolves went on a 9-3 run to finish the set.
 
The Mavericks came out firing in the second set as they jumped out to an early 8-1 lead. Minnesota State was able to come away with the 25-11 win and draw even at 1-1.
 
Minnesota State picked-up right where they left off in the third set defeating Cal State Monterey Bay in dominating fashion with the 25-14 victory.
 
The Mavericks were able to capitalize in the fourth set with a 25-18 effort to overcome the Seawolves and improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
Minnesota State was led by the senior duo of Chelsea Fogarty and Jill Storlie who finished the match with 14 kills and 12 kills respectively, Storlie also recorded a team high eight blocks.
 
Minnesota State will return to action at 1:00 p.m. PT as they face off against the Academy of Art.
