Aubrey Davis sparked a hot-shooting Minnesota State women’s basketball squad Saturday afternoon knocking down six three pointers en route to an 84-65 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in the Mavericks final home game of the regular season.
Southwest Minnesota State controlled the opening five minutes jumping out to a 12-2 lead until MSU put a halt to the Mustangs run with a three pointer by junior guard
Sarah Wiens.
The Mavericks responded with a run of their own after back-to-back three pointers by Davis, cutting the lead to six at 19-13 with 11:18 remaining.
Despite the slow start, MSU went into the break with a 42-37 lead behind a 5-of-6 performance from behind the arc by Davis. Davis led all scorers in the half with 15 points as the Mavericks connected on seven first-half three pointers while also scoring 15 second-chance points.
MSU would take its first double-digit lead of the afternoon at 61-50 with 8:35 remaining as the Mavericks allowed SMSU to shoot just 26.7 percent in the second half which MSU outscored SMSU, 42-28.
The Mavericks would lead by as much as 21 in the final seconds of the game en route to dropping the Mustangs to 6-20 overall and 5-19 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
MSU saw four players reach double figures as Davis led the way with 18 including a 6-of-7 performance from downtown. Sophomore guard
Alli Hoefer finished with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-12 from the field while also pulling down three rebounds. Senior forward
Laura Weber added 15 points and 12 rebounds earning her sixth double-double of the season while fellow senior
Jennie Noreen recorded 14 points, five rebounds and three assists for MSU.
The Mavericks shot 53.2 percent from the field including 9-of-19 (47.4 3FG%) from three-point range compared to just 35.0 percent by the Mustangs while MSU also held a 42-32 rebounding advantage.
Minnesota State (17-9, 13-9 NSIC) begins play in the NSIC tournament Wednesday, Feb. 29. The opponent and location are yet to be determined. Continue to check msumavericks.com as updates be posted once made available.
