Mavericks shoot just 25 percent in loss

Minnesota State Drops 65-44 Decision to Visiting Bulldogs

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State was unable to overcome an impressive first-half run by the visiting Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Friday night dropping a 65-44 contest at the Taylor Center.
 
Minnesota Duluth led by three with 14 minutes remaining before the Bulldogs went on a run which defined the first half.  UMD sprinted out to a 29-10 lead after a 16-0 run over the next five minutes until junior guard Sarah Wiens put a halt to the Bulldogs run with a three-point basket.
 
The Mavericks would use an 11-6 run of their own to cut the lead to 11 as the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 35-24 lead.
 
Minnesota Duluth held a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points in the half as they were led by Katrina Newman’s 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
 
After cutting the lead to ten after six and a half minutes into the second half, UMD went on a 17-3 run taking a 59-35 lead with just under seven minutes remaining.
 
The Mavericks would apply full-court pressure for the majority of the second half forcing nine Bulldog turnovers, however, UMD would outscore MSU, 30-20 in the half securing the 65-44 victory.
 
The win improved the Bulldogs record to 15-8 overall and 12-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as Shelly Stemper led the way with 19 points and six rebounds.  Newman finished the night 6-of-11 from the floor scoring 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
 
Neither team shot well from the field as UMD finished 39.3 percent from the floor compared to just 25.0 percent by MSU.  The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Mavericks, 48-36, while also scoring 16 more points in the paint (22-6).
 
The Mavericks were led by senior forward Laura Weber who finished the night with nine points and seven rebounds. 
 
Minnesota State (15-9, 11-9 NSIC) is back in action tomorrow when the Mavericks host Bemidji State.  Tipoff against the Beavers is scheduled for 4 p.m., at the Taylor Center.
