Mavericks Hit the Road for a Friday, Sunday Series

Mankato, Minn.---Minnesota State (7-17-0, 3-15-0 WCHA) travels to the No.1 Wisconsin’s  (24-2-2, 18-2-2 WCHA) house at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., for a WCHA series. The series will be played on Friday and Sunday, with both games beginning at 2:07 p.m.


University of Wisconsin Notes:

- The No. 1-ranked Badgers (24-2-3, 18-2-2-1 WCHA, 57 points) swept Bemidji State and clinched a home playoff spot last weekend.

- Wisconsin set the NCAA single-game attendance record for women’s hockey after 12,402 fans helped “Fill the Bowl” last Saturday night (Jan. 28) at the Kohl Center.

- UW has set the previous two marks for single game attendance: 10,668 at last year’s “Fill the Bowl” vs Minnesota (Jan 29,2011) and 8,263 at the outdoor Camp Randall Hockey Classic (Feb. 6, 2010).

- The Badgers are currently on a four-game winning streak as four of the last eight games have been decided in overtime.

- Brianna Decker leads the nation in goals with 28 and has the second most points in the country (61). 

- Decker’s linemate Brooke Ammerman is fourth in the nation for points with 55 points (22g, 33a).

- Sophomore goaltender Alex Rigsby is second in the nation with a .949 save percentage.
-  Rigsby has made 764 saves on the season, second best in the nation … Of goalies that have played more than 10 games this season, Rigsby also has the third best goals-against average in the nation (1.49).

- Wisconsin is averaging 4.54 goals and 38.5 shots a game, outshooting opponents nearly ten shots per game. 

- The Badgers are 13-1 at home and 19-0-2 when they score first. 

- UW puts 36 percent of its shots on goal in the first period, only to score 28 percent of its goals in the first period. 

Wisconsin and MSU History:

- Wisconsin traveled to Mankato and picked up the weekend sweep over MSU with 4-0 and 5-1 wins in December. 

- The lone goal scored by Minnesota State came off the stick of Lauren Smith.

- In the last seven games between the two teams, Wisconsin has shutout Minnesota State four times, and only once in that span has MSU scored more than one goal in a game (Nov. 29, 2010).  

- The all-time series sits at 1-49-2 in favor of Wisconsin in the 52 games played between the schools.  

- Last season the Mavericks lost 3-2 in the first meeting, then lost 6-1, 4-0 and 9-1 against the Badgers. 

-MSU’s only win against the Badgers came in the 2009-10 season, earning a 5-3 victory.

- The Mavericks scored four goals last season against UW as senior Emmi Leinonen, junior Lauren Smith, sophomore Tracy McCann and sophomore Kathleen Rogan scored the lamp-lighters. 

- The Mavericks are 1-9 in the last ten games against Wisconsin. 

- UW junior forward Brianna Decker scored five goals and seven assists in the four games against the Mavericks last season, including a hat trick on Feb. 18 at All Seasons Arena. 

- Senior Badger forward Hillary Knight scored five goals and three assists in the four-game series during the 2010-11 season. 

- The Badgers have peppered the Mavericks 261-to-109 in the shots on goal category, as well as scored nine power-play goals and three short-handers in the past six games played.

- The Mavericks have been shutout in the overall series 18 time. Six games have been decided by one goal or less and 14 games the teams have been within two goals or less. 

- Wisconsin have beat the Mavericks by four goals or more in 26 games, including an 8-0 romp in 2008 and a 9-1 game on Feb. 19, 2011. 



Last Year at this Time: Minnesota State was 7-20-3 after 30 games last year. MSU was outscored 92-45 at that point. This season the Mavericks have been outscored 80-52.

First on the Board: The Mavericks are 6-4 after scoring the first goal and 6-1 when leading after two periods of action.



The Lauren Threat:  Lauren Barnes (4-12--16), Lauren Smith (6-10--16) and Lauren Zrust (4-12--16) all share the team-lead in points this season, after Zrust tallied three points last weekend. 

She’s Heating Up: Sophomore  Tracy McCann scored two goals and tallied an assist last Friday against the Gophers. Junior Lauren Zrustt marked two assists last Friday and a goal last Saturday against the Gophers. 

When Falling Behind: MSU had its only comeback win against Bemidji State (1/6) as it stands 1-13 when trailing after the first period and 1-19 when trailing after the second period.
