Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Neither Minnesota State nor Ohio State found the net the night before, but the two teams erupted for seven combined goals Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena. The scoring didn’t spur the Mavericks to a victory though as they fell to the Buckeyes 4-3 in WCHA action.

Fans didn’t need to wait long for the first goal as MSU junior Tracy McCann scored her eighth goal of the season just 1:29 into the contest. Seniors Lauren Smith and Emilia Andersson each assisted the goal giving the Mavericks the early advantage.

Hokey Langan evened the game at the 9:23 mark for Ohio State with a power play goal, and Paige Semenza gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead with a late first period goal.

Both teams combined for four goals in the second period.

Sophomore Kathleen Rogan tied the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal 5:20 into period, but Langan countered with her second goal of the game less than two minutes later to regain the lead for Ohio State.

With 10:31 left in the second period, sophomore Casey Hirsch scored her fourth goal of the season re-tying the game, but yet again Ohio State responded when Julia McKinnon put the Buckeyes back on top with the game-winning power play goal with 5:59 remaining in the period 4-3.

Needing an equalizing goal in the third, the Mavericks were only able to manage one shot on goal.

Junior netminder Danielle Butters stopped 38 Buckeye shots on the afternoon, after sending back 45 the night before. Ohio State’s Chelsea Knapp saved 17 of 20 Maverick shots.

Minnesota State (5-10-3 overall, 3-8-3-1 WCHA) takes to the ice next Friday and Saturday at  the National Hockey Center against host St. Cloud State in its final series of season’s first-half.
