Senior Lauren Smith scored her second and third goals of the year to help MSU spring the upset over #5 North Dakota

Minnesota State Storms Back to Defeat #5 North Dakota 3-2

Box Score Grand Forks, N.D. ---  The Maverick women’s hockey team scored three goals in the final ten minutes to overcome a two-goal deficit and spring the upset over #5 North Dakota Friday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Senior forward Lauren Smith scored the second of her two goals with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to give MSU its first win of the season.  Junior forward Tracy McCann added a goal and two assists for the Mavericks.

The duo of Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux gave UND its first marker at 18:52 of the first period when Jocelyn snuck a pass from her sister past junior goaltender Danielle Butters giving UND a 1-0 lead.

Minnesota State was able to tighten up defensively as both teams played to a scoreless second period.  The Mavericks outshot North Dakota 10-2 but could not capitalize on four power-play opportunites in the frame.

UND increased the margin at 2:48 of the third period when Andrea Dalen recorded her first goal of the season giving North Dakota a 2-0 lead.

McCann brought Minnesota State within one at 10:37 of the third period snapping a shot past netminder Shelby Amsley-Benzie for her second goal of the year.

Three minutes later, Lauren Smith led the charge helping MSU find the net for its first power-play goal of the night in eight opportunities.

Smith capped off the comeback at 19:42 of the third period when the senior fired a shot past Amsley-Benzie giving Minnesota State its first victory in Grand Forks since Feb. 19, 2010.

Butters made 16 saves - including seven in the third period - to earn her first win of the season.

The Mavericks outshot UND 10-8 in the third period and 23-18 overall.

Minnesota State (1-1-1, 1-1-1 WCHA) goes for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena with drop of the puck set for 2:07 p.m.
