#14 Minnesota State Comes Up Short Against Wayne State

Box Score Wayne, Neb. – The Maverick volleyball team squared off against the Wayne State Wildcats in Wayne, Neb., Minnesota State was looking for the season-sweep against No. 18 Wayne State, but had its efforts come up short as they fell in three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-13.

The Mavericks struggled offensively, hitting only .075 in the first set, as they fell to the Wildcats by a score of 25-20. Minnesota State was led offensively by sophomore middle blocker Tiana Runck who finished the first set with three kills.  

Minnesota State started the second set with a 6-1 lead before Wayne State was able to rally, bringing the match to a 10-10 tie before going on an 8-0 run taking the 18-10 advantage before freshman setter Ellie Van De Steeg was able to earn the Mavericks a side-out. Minnesota State ended up falling in the set by a score of 25-20.

The Mavericks offensive struggles continued in the third set as they found themselves down, 17-5 in the set. Minnesota State went on to lose the set by a score of 25-13, falling to Wayne State by a score of 3-0, dropping to 16-8 on the season and 10-6 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Minnesota State was led by Runck, who tallied a team-high 11 kills and hit .348 in the match. Van De Steeg hit .444 while recording 21 assists, five kills and two blocks. Collectively the Mavericks hit just .095 in the match and committed 20 attacking errors.

The Mavericks will return to action Thursday, as they host the Peacocks from Upper Iowa University, game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.  in the friendly confines of the Taylor Center.
