Mavericks Return Home For Only Time In January

What's Up: The Minnesota State men's basketball team (4-9, 3-6 NSIC) returns to the Taylor Center in Bresnan Arena for the only time in the month of January this weekend as it entertains Northern State (Friday, 8 p.m., Oldies 100.5 FM) and U-Mary (Saturday, 6 p.m., KYSM AM 1230 the Fan Mankato).

Minnesota State History: The 2011-12 season marks the 90th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men’s basketball. The Mavericks are 1,184-831 (.588) in 2,014 games since the program’s inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 53-18  record (.746) to go with a pair of regular-season championships.
    
The Mavericks have made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, going 12-9 (.571) in those trips.

A Little Bit About Northern State:   Northern State enters the weekend owners of a 9-5 record and are 5-5 in the NSIC, good for eighth place.  The Wolves are averaging 75.6 points per game while allowing 69.4.  As a team, NSU is shooting 48.5 percent from the floor and is outrebounding its opponents by a 36.5-30.8 margin.
    
Junior forward Dustin Tetzlaff leads the squad in scoring and rebounding averaging 15.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 58 percent from the field.  Fellow junior Colin Pryor is averaging 14 points and 6.6 rebounds, while shooting 50.4 percent from the floor, to round out the Wolves in double-figures.

Northern State is coached by Paul Sather who is in his second year with the program and owns a 19-13 record in Aberdeen and a 113-75 record in his career.

Inside The Series: Minnesota State leads the all-time series 12-5...Head coach Matt Margenthaler is 5-3 all-time against Northern State...Last year, MSU won at Northern State, 91-73...Sophomore forward Connor O'Brien leads all active Mavericks in scoring averaging 8.0 points per game while senior guard Stephen Kirschbaum is second on the team in scoring at 4.5 points per game in four career games against the Wolves...Sophomore guard Travis Meinders is averaging 3.0 points and sophomore guard Jimmy Whitehead is averaging 2.0 points per game...Sophomore guard Alex Hanks has played against Northern State but not yet scored.

A Little Bit About U-Mary: The University of Mary enters this weekend owners of a 3-11 record and are 2-8 in the NSIC, which is good for 12th place.

As a team, U-Mary is averaging 65.6 points per game while giving up 73.0.  The Marauders are shooting 46 percent from the floor and are being outrebounded, by a -3.1 margin (34.0-30.9).

Junior wing Josh Turner leads the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game while senior forward Damon Smith is averaging 13.6 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds while shooting 55.3 percent from the floor. Junior guard Darius Robinson is averaging 11.8 points to round the scoring.

Jevin Budde is the head coach at U-Mary and is in his first year with the program.

Inside The Series:  Minnesota State leads the all-time series 4-1 with all four games being coached by head coach Matt Margenthaler...Last year, U-Mary defeated MSU, 86-74 in Bismarck, N.D...Four Mavericks have played against U-Mary for the Mavericks as sophomore guards Alex Hanks and Travis Meinders have each scored three points against U-Mary while senior guard Stephen Kirschbaum is averaging four points in three career games...U-Mary head coach Jevin Budde played two seasons at Minnesota State under Margenthaler and owns a degree in elementary education from MSU.
