Mavericks Look to Remain Perfect in Final Tune-up

9/7/2011 3:31:00 PM

What Lies Ahead: The No. 12 Minnesota State Mavericks will put their perfect 4-0 record on the line this weekend as they travel to Bolivar, Mo., to compete in the Southwest Baptist Purple Bash.

The Mavericks are scheduled for four games against No. 22 Truman State (3-1), Colorado School of Mines (4-1), Arkansas Ft. Smith (3-1) and Northwest Missouri State (2-2). The Southwest Baptist Purple Bash will mark the final non-conference action for the Mavericks before they begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sept. 13 at home against Winona State.

A Look Back:
The Minnesota State Maverick volleyball team went 4-0 this past week including two wins against Alaska Fairbanks, and single wins against Dallas Baptist and Grand Canyon University. The Mavericks were the 2011 Nanook Classic tournament champions after posting a 3-0 record at the event. Both MSU and Dallas Baptist were undefeated heading into the tournament’s final game as the Mavericks took the finale, 3-1, leaving them as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The Mavericks were led in the tournament by the classic’s Most Valuable Player, senior setter Brittany Stamer, who recorded 169 assists, 16 kills and 45 digs. Also earning All-Tournament honors were junior middle blocker Jill Storlie and junior outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty. Storlie recorded 56 kills while Fogarty tallied 51.

New Assist Leader?:
Last year setter Brittany Stamer (Hutchinson, Minn.) led the Mavericks with 1,191 assists as she became the fifth Maverick to join the MSU 3,000 assist club. Stamer currently owns 3,604 career assists as she remains 763 away from the school’s all-time record. Jen Blendermann (1999-2002) currently owns the all-time assist record with 4,367. Stamer has averaged 1,145 assists per season throughout her first three years.
