What Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State football team returns to historic Blakeslee Stadium this weekend as it opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference portion of its schedule against Northern State, a member of the NSIC North Division. Saturday's game is brought to you by University Dining Services.
A Little History Lesson: The 2011 season marks the school's 85th season playing football. The Mavericks are 373-373-28 (.500) in 774 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922. Minnesota State is in its fourth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 23-7 record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 17 conference championships including 15 NIC titles.
What's in a Win: A win would mark the fifth straight season that Minnesota State has opened its home portion of its schedule with a win....It would also give MSU its 374th win in school history...A victory would be the 26th victory for head coach
Todd Hoffner at MSU and the 72nd victory of his career...A win would give MSU its 24th victory in the Northern Sun Conference...It would also give MSU a its fifth straight victory against Northern State and its third victory in the city of Mankato against the Wolves.
W2W4: Minnesota State junior wideout
Adam Thielen enters Saturday's game as the leading active receiver on the Mavericks with 959 yards...Thielen, who averages 45.7 yards of receiving per game over his career is 41 yards away from 1,000 career receiving yards.
Scouting Northern State: Last weekend, Northern State upended Southwest Minnesota State in a nonconference tilt, 30-17. The Wolves opened the game with a 14-3 lead and never looked back.
Northern State finished the game with 313 yards of offense while allowing 407. The Wolves' defense came up with three interceptions to thwart SMSU's chances for a come back.
Offensively, freshman running back Aaron Mayo led the ground attack with nine carries for 51 yards and a score while junior Kristin James added 12 carries for 38 yards and two scores. Senior quarterback Nick Wanner completed 10-of-12 passes for 183 yards and a score while junior wideout Nick Hanley caught five passes for 73 yards. Senior linebacker Mike Bogdanovich filled the statline defensively as he had 11 tackles, including two-and-a-half for a loss, an interception, pass break-up, half a sack and a quarterback hurry.
The Wolves are coached by Tom Dosch who is his second year with the program, owning a 3-9 record and is 27-27 in his six years as a head coach.
Series Notes: This year marks the sixth game all-time between the two squads..The Mavericks own a 4-1 record in the series and have won the last four contests...MSU is 3-0 in Mankato against Northern State...Junior wideout
Adam Thielen is the leading returning receiver for the Mavericks against the Wolves with four catches for 96 yards and a touchdown...Sophomore defensive end
Chris Schaudt is the leading returning tackler against the Wolves as he registered five stops last year, including three for a loss and a sack.
Weather Report: According to weather.com, Saturday's high in Mankato calls for 79 with clear skies.
Radio Show and Weekly Luncheons: The Todd Hoffner Radio Show will air live on AM 1230 KYSM, the Fan Mankato from 7-7:30 at the downtown Buffalo Wild Wings location. The show will be hosted by Mike Sullivan and/or Casey Lloyd, the voices of the Maverick football program and will feature head coach Todd Hoffner as the Mavericks will recap the previous week's contest and look ahead at their next opponent. Each week a special guest will also make an appearance during the show.

Additionally, the Loose Moose will host the Maverick Football Luncheon on the Friday before each home game. Each luncheon will feature comments from Coach Hoffner as well as players and are open to everyone. The Loose Moose will have lunch menu items available to order during this time.
