Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – The four-match road stretch the 13
th ranked Mavericks started on Friday night didn’t begin as planned as MSU was swept in three sets against the unranked Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles.
The first set was filled with excitement and back-and-forth action as the largest lead of the set belonged to Minnesota Crookston at 8-4. The set would feature 14 ties with the last one coming at 25. However, it was Crookston who scored the final two points, taking the first set, 27-25.
MSU came out flat in the second set as the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. Crookston never let up for the remainder of the set as it downed the Mavericks, 25-18.
There would be no comeback on this night for the Mavericks despite a close third set which the Mavericks dropped, 28-26. MSU had a chance to end the set as it led, 25-24, but was unable to capitalize as Crookston finished the set on a 4-1 run to complete the sweep of the Mavericks.
Minnesota State was led offensively by junior outside hitter
Kayla Berning who finished with 13 kills on 30 attempts. Berning also added three digs and five total blocks. Senior setter
Brittany Stamer led the Mavericks with a game-high 32 assists while also leading the team with 16 digs.
The loss leaves Minnesota State at 9-5 overall and 2-4 in NSIC action while the win gives Minnesota Crookston a 7-8 overall record and a 2-4 NSIC record.
The Mavericks have a quick turnaround as they travel to Moorhead, Minn., Saturday to face MSU Moorhead.
